Cigar Smoke: Is It Really That Harmful?

cigar hazardsCigar smokers inhale a lot of smoke whether consciously or not, but the question in consideration here is whether or not cigar smoke can also cause similar damage to the persons who inhale it indirectly. Passive smoke is also dangerous and all of us know that, but what we are discussing is whether or not it is as dangerous as smoking a cigar and it is quite shocking to inform that it is, that is if not more. Yes, passive smokers can be in even more danger of developing cancer than active smokers, especially in case of cigars.

The reason why a cigar can cause more damage than a cigarette is largely due to its bigger size and burn time. Environmental tobacco smoke refers to all the smoke that is released each time a cigar or cigarette or any sort of tobacco product is lit. Even the smoke that a smoker inhales is released into the environment after he exhales it out.

Be it cigars or the cigarettes, both emit numerous harmful chemicals and carcinogens like nicotine, carbon monoxide, vinyl chlorine, arsenic, hydro carbons, benzene, ammonia and so much more! All of these are chemicals that are tremendously harmful to the human body and most can cause you to develop cancer in various parts of your body when taken inside the body. It is therefore imaginable as to what the results of passive smoking can be.

It would be sad to say this to a cigar lover but the truth is that cigars are more harmful than cigarettes. A vintage cigar produces smoke that is filled with more carcinogens than it was before it was fermented or aged. What happens is that the fermentation process increases the numbers of carcinogens present originally in the cigar and as cigars are wrapped in non-porous paper, they undergo a slow and unclean burn when lit, producing a lot more toxins than a shorter, unfermented, fast burning cigarette.

As mentioned earlier, cigars are much larger and fatter than cigarettes; therefore it is obvious that they will produce more smoke. The smoke becomes even more toxic due to the fermentation of the tobacco and the longer duration is yet another factor that explains why cigars produce so much carcinogens.

In real world however, cigarettes can do more damage than cigars as cigarettes are smoked in a much larger number than cigars. The frequency over time catches up with cigarette smokers and surpasses the harmful effects of the cigar smoke. Non-smokers are advised to stay well clear of areas where both cigars and cigarettes are smoked to avoid passively inhaling the harmful elements inside. All smokers should also smoke in open or ventilated areas as well as avoiding inhalation of the smoke as much as possible. Practice the proper smoking habits and etiquettes to control the damage done by the smoke of your cigar or cigarette.
