We all know that wine becomes more and more exquisite and old liquor is cherished all over the world, but what some of us do not know is that even cigars increase in potency and flavor when aged in the proper way. This however is not a new concept to any cigar devotee, in fact many rich and influential cigar smokers only smoke cigars that are aged in the proper fashion over time as only then can you attain the subtle and intricate flavors.
Cigars of the vintage quality are available with good tobacconists and shops, but if you are not so rich that you can afford to buy them every time you want to smoke a vintage cigar, you can follow a few instructions to try and age your own cigars to maturity. Unlike wine, a cigar is not to be aged for more than a year or so and it is usually enough to mature the cigar into its very best. You must be patient and follow the rules of ageing properly though.
The cigars that you plan to age should be of a good quality to begin with otherwise the ageing process will not be able to do much for the basic inferior quality of the cigar. In order to age a cigar properly, you need to store it under the right conditions so that it does not lose its potency due to the changing weather conditions. A humidor is to be used to maintain the temperature and the humidity in the place where the cigars are stored for ageing. Both the temperature and the humidity should remain at 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 70% at all times to properly maintain the right temperatures for ageing.
The humidor should be large enough to accommodate the cigars. To be more exact it should be twice the volume of the cigars that you plan to keep in them. Maintain the humidor’s temperature and humidity ideally at all times, because anything more or less than the 70-70 rule could rot or slow the ageing process altogether.
It is preferable if the humidor has cedar lining as cedar oil may mix with the tobacco leaves to implement slight changes in the flavor. The blending of the cedar oil with the tobacco leaves is a necessary part for improving the quality of the cigar as it is being aged in the humidor. If you take out the cigars after a year and find that they do not have lumps on them then you can be sure that your weather controls were well implemented and successful. Now, Smoke a cigar from your year old effort to enjoy the exquisite flavor of a good quality cigar that has undergone ageing.
