The glass is excellent quality and the jar is in exceptionally great condition.The top is hollow (where one would put the sponge to help control internal moisture content and protect the tobacco or cigars) with the outside rough ground to match the inside of the jar. This helps ensure an air tight seal to keep the cigar or tobacco fresh and soft. The top is hollow to allow inserting a damp sea sponge or even a cloth to help preserve your fine cigars and/or tobacco.The bottom of the jar has a small polished ground rim with some wear but it is not excessive.I think you will find this is a wonderful addition to your pattern glass or tobacciana collection.After nearly three years of my trying to identify this pattern, a fellow eBay'er was able to help. The pattern identification by Dori Miles, Pattern Glass Historian and author of the Wallace-Homestead Price Guide to Pattern Glass, 11th Ed. Dori is also a regular on the Pottery, China and Glassware eBay Community message board. She also made this comment "...[I] never saw one except in the catalog....". She is really a kind and nice lady who provides tremendous help and information to her fellow eBay members so a huge thank you to her for this id. The piece can be found in The Complete Book of McKee Glass, by Sandra McPhee Stout, page 370. Condition:This is as pristine a piece of EAPG as you might care to find. Just look at the larger images found at the link under the gallery above. Those images to demonstrate the fine condition of this piece. There is no external wear to the sides, some minor wear under the base where it should be and no internal wear. I find no damage to this piece...no chips, cracks, repairs or restorations.All of our items come from a smoke-free, pet-free home...even though we love the puppy dawgs.
